Day 6, D-Day and Normandy

We awoke at 6am to the wonderful sound of French cars and people wandering the city. After we walked to the agency at a brisk pace. Upon arrival we were handed our tickets promptly and go in the "cue" for bus number one. Most of us enjoyed a lovely nap on the way to the World War II Memorial Museum. The museum was very large but very interesting. Most of the captions were in French, German, and English. Around noon we ate lunch at the restaurant in the museum. It was delicious. First we went to Pointe du Hoc and were amazed by the HUGE craters left by bombs. There were also plenty of bunkers to explore. There was also a memorial in memory of the Rangers. Next we stopped at Omaha beach were the Americans came ashore. After 10 minutes there we moved onto the largest American cemetery in Normandy where we saw the gravesites of the Roosevelt brothers. The crosses/stars of David were perfectly aligned and facing the United States. There was also a wall of the missing that was very moving along with Americas Youth Rising out of the water which was a beautiful statue. Next we went to Gold Beach where large slabs of concert had been pruposefully sunk in order to support the false harbor. The last and final beach was Juno where the Canadians had landed. Then we all enjoyed a fantastic nap on the way home. At the museum Zach met a French teen who he enjoyed a wonderful converation with even though there was a language barrier. Katie also met a college guy from Georgia who she talked to wile on the bus ride home. All in it was a very pleasant day with many friends and memories made.
